Valuation
Project earnings forward and see what return today's price implies.
Seeded from BCV's reported EPS growth of 30.2% a year over 13 years. Historical EPS growth of 30% reflects a recovery from a low base and won't persist. Capped at 30% as a starting point.
- EPS in 5 years
- $27.37
- Implied price
- $82.10
- Return from $24.81
- 27.0% a year
To earn 15.0% a year on these assumptions you'd need to buy at $40.82 — today's price is already 39.2% below that.
How sensitive is that answer?
Annual return across nearby assumptions. If the result is only attractive in one corner, that is the finding.
| growth \ P/E | -1 | 1 | 3 | 5 | 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20.0% | — | -5.9% | 17.3% | 29.9% | 38.9% |
| 25.0% | — | -1.9% | 22.2% | 35.3% | 44.7% |
| 30.0% | — | 2.0% | 27.0% | 40.7% | 50.5% |
| 35.0% | — | 5.9% | 31.9% | 46.1% | 56.3% |
| 40.0% | — | 9.8% | 36.8% | 51.5% | 62.1% |
This is arithmetic on assumptions you chose, not a forecast or a recommendation. It ignores dividends, buybacks, share issuance and debt, and it assumes a company still earning money in 5 years. Change any input and the answer changes a lot — that sensitivity is the honest result, not a flaw in the model.

BCV: Deep Discount And Another Payout Lift The Bancroft Fund remains a 'Buy' due to an attractive discount, but it is quite a persistently deep discount, so no screaming bargain. BCV's portfolio is heavily weighted toward convertible securities, with significant AI-related exposure driving strong results. Since our last write-up, the fund once again lifted its payout to investors, and the deep discount 'boosts' the distribution yield, too.

31 further Form 4 entries are share awards, option exercises or shares withheld for tax. Those are compensation, not trades, so they are excluded above. Buying is the stronger signal: an insider spends their own money for one reason. Selling has many innocent explanations — tax, diversifying, a house — so it says far less than it appears to.
